A province can lead an average-wage table without telling you what a typical worker takes home. Start with the population behind the number.

China’s National Bureau of Statistics reports 2025 gross annual means of CNY 129,441 for urban non-private unit employees and CNY 71,590 for private unit employees. The categories describe different employer populations. Non-private does not mean government only: the official notes also include foreign-invested and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan-invested enterprises. The survey covers urban legal entities with at least five employees and excludes individual businesses and freelancers.

For an offer comparison, write down four things: the data year; the employer category and region; annual gross base plus bonuses; and which deductions or benefits are included. Keep those fields beside the original table. A mean is total wages divided by average employee count, so it cannot supply a median.

A worked example: CNY 129,441 divided by twelve is CNY 10,786.75. That arithmetic is correct, but it is only a monthly equivalent of an annual mean. It is not evidence of a normal monthly payslip or a take-home amount.

Caijing’s provincial comparison is displayed as published October 27, 2026. ThreadEast observed its Tencent News listing October 29 at 01:29 China Standard Time. We read that account and the NBS national table and definitions, not every provincial yearbook table; we did not test the article’s causal explanation for regional differences.
