A request wrapper can look small while carrying a large behavior contract. Before replacing one, write down what its callers expect for success, HTTP errors, empty bodies, authentication refresh, cancellation and streaming.

Our October 22 ThreadEast brief follows a Juejin post by ErpanOmer, displayed as published October 20. The author argues for replacing Axios with Fetch in a particular team. That experience is a useful prompt for a review, but it does not establish what every application should do.

First check the transport. Axios documents a Fetch adapter introduced in version 1.7.0 and stream response support where the environment supports it. An assertion that Axios cannot stream needs a version, adapter and runtime attached. Documentation of an available feature still needs an application-level test.

Then check the signal. The article's wrapper selects config.signal ?? AbortSignal.timeout(timeout). A supplied caller signal takes the first branch, so this expression does not combine that signal with the fallback deadline. If both conditions are required, a dependent signal such as AbortSignal.any can express that rule where supported.

We ran an isolated Node.js 24.15.0 check: four assertions passed for the deadline, caller-selected signal and their combination. No HTTP request was made. This was not a migration test, browser-compatibility check or benchmark.

Finally, separate API cleanup from library replacement. Axios deprecates CancelToken and supports AbortController. That identifies one modernization task; it does not decide the cost of replacing the entire client.

Keep a compact record: dependency version, adapter, runtime, required behavior, official reference and the result you actually observed. Mark planned tests as planned. Measure your own bundle and workload before claiming savings.
